Our Mission

Mental Health America of Monroe County is a

501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to

promoting mental health and supporting mental 

health consumers and their families through education,

referral, and service. We achieve our mission by educating the public about ways to preserve and strengthen mental health; by sponsoring support groups; by serving as a clearinghouse for information about mental health promotion, prevention, and treatment resources in our community; and by fostering innovation in policy, research, practice, and services.

Recent & Current Accomplishments

(Mental Health America (MHA) & Suicide Prevention Coalition (SPC) of Monroe County

  • Growth of the MHA Board of Directors and Coalition membership

  • Awards given to the Bloomington Police Dept. Officers  for their suicide prevention efforts

  • Recommencement of the Breakfast Learning Series

  • Organized training and sponsorship of Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) booklets to MCSSC teaching staff in suicide awareness.

  • Sponsored training the trainer (Lieutenant Lucas Tate) for Mental Health First Aid to train all BPD officers

  • Training of trainers for QPR

  • Assisted with the Lumiere Ball fundraising event

  • Supported the annual Out of the Darkness Run/Walk event 

  • Participation in the annual Meadows Hospital Brown County Conference

  • Involvement in the annual State Suicide Prevention Conference

  • Sponsored Youth Services Bureau for their Social Inclusion Program

  • Joined System of Care to develop a providers/community resources website for Monroe County area—LookUp Indiana

  • Representation at the Indiana (state) Suicide Prevention Coalition monthly meetings

  • Funding the creation of suicide prevention metal signage to place in high risk areas (parking garages, hospital garage)

  • Developed new, updated, comprehensive SPC brochures for the community

  • Working with Richard Bean Blossom School Corporation for QPR training

  • Provided LOSS kits for the International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day and hosted event

  • Trained members of our coalition in LOSS and creating a LOSS team

  • Created new bookmarks to distribute to local libraries 

  • Created resiliency wristbands with reminder card to unify the community in a message of HOPE

  • Suicide prevention radio sports campaign with WBWB and Spirit 95

  •  Implementation of Bring Change to Mind group at Bloomington High School North

  • Participated the AFSP Field Advocate Day at the State Capitol
